WHAT ARE SMALL GROUPS & WHY SHOULD WE USE THEM?

Small groups are a way for students to engage with one another to learn or practice skills through inquiry and discovery. In general, small groups and cooperative learning vary greatly between content. The small groups implemented in a reading class may not look the same as the small groups in a science class. One aspect of small groups remains the same, regardless of subject matter - student impact.

In this class, we will use small groups for both learning new material and practicing material after it has been introduced. Cooperative learning has very powerful outcomes for students as they learn to communicate effectively about their knowledge and challenge one another's ways of thinking apporpriately. These are skills that are extremely important as we prepare our students to be ready for high school, and inevitably college or a profession.

Our class has very specific norms for working in groups. The only way small groups can work is if we are committed to our Group Norms!
